SEO or paid ads — which is better for my business?
Paid ads buy customers this week and stop the moment you stop paying; SEO (and its 2026 sibling, AEO) compounds for years but takes months to start. The right answer for most Indian businesses is sequencing, not choosing: ads to find out what converts, organic to make what converts progressively cheaper.
What each one actually is
- Paid ads (Google/Meta): a tap you pay to keep open. Predictable, fast, measurable — and rented. Cost per lead generally rises as more competitors bid.
- SEO/AEO: owned visibility in search results and AI answers. Slow to start (months), cheap to maintain, and it keeps producing after the work is paid for.
The decision, honestly
| Your situation | Start with |
|---|---|
| Need customers this month | Ads — nothing organic works that fast |
| Sell something people already search for (“interior designer Chennai”) | Both — ads now, SEO catching the same queries free later |
| Sell something new people don’t search for yet | Ads/social — SEO can’t catch demand that doesn’t exist |
| Marketing budget under ~₹30k/month total | Organic + content — thin ad budgets get eaten by learning costs |
| Already profitable on ads | Add SEO/AEO now — every month you don’t, you re-rent traffic you could own |
The trap in each direction
- Ads-only: you’re on a treadmill that speeds up. The day the budget pauses — festival season cash crunch, anything — revenue goes to zero with it.
- SEO-only: six months of “we’re building authority” with no revenue is how businesses die waiting. Organic is a compounding asset, not a survival plan.
The system answer
The reason this feels like a hard either/or is that both channels dump into the same place: your site, your WhatsApp, your follow-up. If that system leaks, both channels underperform and you’ll blame the channel. Fix the system, run ads for now-revenue, build organic for later-margin — that’s the whole playbook, and it’s how we structure engagements.
