How do I know a marketing agency won't waste my money?

You can't know in advance — but you can make waste visible fast. Demand three things before signing: a specific number the agency will be accountable for, access to your own data (ad accounts, analytics — owned by you, not them), and a monthly report you can reconcile against your actual sales. Agencies that resist any of the three are planning to sell you activity.

Why this fear is rational

Almost every Indian business owner who’s hired an agency has a burn story: months of retainers, decks full of impressions, and no line you could draw to revenue. The problem is usually structural, not moral — agencies priced on deliverables get paid for activity, so activity is what they optimize.

The pre-signing checklist

  1. One number, named in the contract. Leads, orders, qualified calls — whatever fits your business. Not “brand awareness.” If they won’t name a number, they don’t expect to move one.
  2. Your accounts, your ownership. Ad accounts, analytics, pixel, domain — created under YOUR logins, with the agency as a user. Agencies that insist on owning your accounts are building a hostage situation for the day you leave.
  3. Reconcilable reporting. The monthly report should contain numbers you can check against your own bank account and order system. “Reach: 2.4 lakh” is not checkable. “137 orders attributed, ₹4.1L revenue” is.
  4. A defined exit. Month-to-month after an initial term, and a written list of what you keep (accounts, creatives, data) when you go. Confidence about the exit is the strongest signal about the work.
  5. Proof over polish. One case study with real numbers a client agreed to publish beats a showreel. Ask: “show me a business like mine, and the numbers.”

The question that filters fastest

Ask any agency: “Walk me through the mechanism — why will this specific plan produce customers for my specific business?” Confident agencies explain the machine. Weak ones recite the deliverables list.
